Using an ink brush, the teaching artist shows and explains the relationship between ancient Chinese pictographs and their modern day ideographs. Students get to participate by learning how to write Chinese symbols and characters with brushes as well as studying simple words and dialogs in Mandarin. -

Debate Club/SPARK Business Academy
Students learn the art of persuasion and help select debate topics they find interesting. Students work in rotating groups and practice their debating skills in a supportive environment, including developing arguments, issuing rebuttals, providing examples, rebuilding their case and summarizing points of view. Drum Circle & Stick Fit/Afro Brazil Arts/Michael Goldstein
Participants will be learning rhythms playing drums and other percussion instruments, including agogo bells and shakers. Students will also learn freestyle and choreographed steps, spins and jumps from Maculelê, a warrior dance created by Africans in Brazil. Our participants will experience the connection of dance and rhythm in a fun, easy to learn and supportive class. No experience with drumming or dance necessary. All levels welcome. -

Adventurers wanted for Dungeons & Dragons (D&D)! In Dungeons & Dragons, players form an adventuring party to explore fantasy worlds together, go on epic quests and level up in experience. The Game Master (also known as the GM) is the game's referee and storyteller. There’s no winning or losing in D&D—at least, not in the conventional way. Create a character and join others on an adventure as you roll dice and decide what happens next! -

Do you like plants? Are you interested in biology (the science of living things)? If so, then this is the place for you! We're going to learn all about the many different types of plant life on Earth and even grow a few of our own! We'll study how plants evolved and learn how they are both similar and different to animal life with some fun experiments, a few plant-based crafts, some really silly games and even a few plant-dissections too! We'll grow plants of our very own using traditional soil, hydroponics and even a few alternative mediums too, like super-absorbent polymers instead of soil. We'll even attempt to grow plants alongside insects to see if we can help create symbiotic habitats. So if you're interested in learning more about plants, this is the place for you - no "green thumb" required! -
Girls on the Run/GOTR
Girls on the Run is a 2-day per week commitment (Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:45-4:15). Students are taught life skills through fun, engaging lessons that celebrate the joy of movement. The 20-lesson curriculum is taught by certified Girls on the Run coaches and includes three parts: understanding ourselves, valuing relationships and teamwork and understanding how we connect with and shape the world at large. At each season's conclusion, the girls and their running buddies complete a 5k running event in December. Over the course of the program, girls will develop and improve competence, feel confidence in who they are, develop strength of character, respond to others and oneself with care and compassion, create positive connections with peers and adults, and make a meaningful contribution to community and society. VERY IMPORTANT: All families will need to register on the Girls on the Run Website , gotrnyc.org/register. GOTR charges $350 for each participant - this amount is included in your afterschool bill. DO NOT PAY Girls on the Run directly. If you would like to apply for a scholarship, you must let us know as soon as possible. If not, we will assume that you can pay the full $350 program fee. We will notify you when the GOTR registration is open. The official GOTR program will end in December after the 5K. All girls registered for GOTR on Tuesdays & Thursdays can remain in afterschool for the remaining weeks of the semester at no additional cost. -

In this high-energy after-school class, students start with a warm-up to prevent injury and get their bodies ready to move. They learn how to count music and understand rhythm, then break down hip-hop dance moves—sometimes traveling across the floor to build coordination. Then on to learning choreography to various songs, preparing for exciting performances! We’ll experiment with playdoh, bubble wands, and 3D designed geometric shapes like triangles, pentagons, and hexagons to test structural integrity and create giant sustainable structures like water filtering mountains and windmills in Tinkercad. And we’ll import our towering bridges and buildings into our own Minecraft worlds. This camp combines hands-on building and drawing with a 3D printing pen with the imaginative power of Tinkercad and Minecraft to bring your wildest sustainable architecture ideas to life. School Age Child Care licenses require that PreK students be grouped separately from older students. They may be grouped only with K students with a staff to child ratio of 1:8 with a group size less than 12. PreK play activities will include arts & crafts, playground time, legos, sports and more. -

Swimming / Enes Mernica, Mark Vazquez
This is a beginner swim class. Children will be levelled based on ability/experience.Children are expected to bring bathing suits and towels to swimming every week. The child’s name should be on all items. BATHING CAPS are required for boys & girls with hair below their ears. After an initial evaluation, some students may be asked to change to a higher or lower level swim class. If a child is sick or unable to swim, families must provide a written note to the afterschool staff. Accommodations in another class are not guaranteed and students who do not swim are NOT allowed in the pool area. Students may only sign up for 1 swim class per week. If there is availability after registration, another swim class can be added. -
Tennis / Advantage Quickstart Tennis
Advantage Quickstart Tennis Now kids’ tennis is easier and more fun! Advantage Tennis Club’s Quickstart Tennis program is designed exclusively for students ages 4 and up, no experience needed. Children play with age and size-appropriate racquets on smaller courts using special slow-bouncing balls. They learn from experienced professionals through non-competitive drills, games and instructional tennis basics and fundamentals. This is a premium class and costs $47 per class. -

This semester we will continue our fall studies including making leaf field guides, bird models and woodland animal dioramas. we will continue with a geology study making rock boxes and beginning our own rock collection with special rocks.
